The Animal Care Assistant Supervisor provides functional supervision, operational assistance and technical guidance to the animal care staff. This position is responsible for assisting management in all aspects of Marine Life operations including husbandry operations, assisting staff with maintenance, inclusive dietary preparation and distribution and collection of organisms.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Ensuring accurate Marine Life record keeping including requisitions and orders.
  • Assisting job hazard assessments with all animal care staff.
  • Assigning health and safety courses to animal care staff deemed necessary for operational requirements.
  • Assisting management with planning, design and construction of exhibits while maintaining the facilities through routine maintenance.
  • Assisting in managing the animal life support program including staff training for servicing life support systems, water chemistry, analysis of results, and making changes accordingly.
  • Organizing and observing staff presentations ensuring exceptional customer service while delivering an educational and conservational message about the facility and animals.
  • Maintaining animal and animal care staff safety through health and safety policies and protocols for day-to-day facility procedures.
  • Training, coaching and supervising staff interactions and goals by overseeing staff training programs in the husbandry care of variety of animals, which may include mentoring in handling and medical care of animals.
  • Assisting with the ZIMS (Zoological Information Management System).
  • Training staff in non-voluntary handling and behavior techniques (such as restraint, and unconditioned medical behaviors).
  • Directing and training staff to work with a diverse collection of animals for mall-walks, exhibit cleans, feeding schedules, reptile and spineless wonders outreaches.
  • Assisting power shutdowns and power transfers (overnight task)
  • Assigning daily job tasks according to operational requirements.
  • Understanding animal needs by monitoring health and collecting samples.
  • Assisting in managing and performing a comprehensive nutritional program.
  • Other responsibilities as required.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Three (3) years-experience working in an animal related field with experience focused in the husbandry of any of the following: reptile, birds, primates, aquatic species, and marine mammals.
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant biological field. Extensive experience in animal care may serve in lieu of a degree.
  • Thorough familiarization with operation of a CAZA facility, including knowledge and understanding of modern animal husbandry techniques.
  • Previous experience with public speaking, scheduling, customer service experience and effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with the ability to easily learn different software programs.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license and able to provide a clear Driver’s Abstract.
  • Rescue SCUBA diver level certification from an internationally recognized institution.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs repeatedly.
Terms of Employment:
  • This is a full-time position that requires flexible availability Monday through Sunday including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to pass a basic security clearance and provide a clear drivers abstract.
